Emergency Checklist PDF
A recent close call with a natural disaster, that I previously mentioned, has me thinking more about the safety and well being of the family and demonstrated first hand how quickly things such as electricity, water and shelter, that we rely on daily can be taken away.
I'm a list maker so I started looking for lists that others had already made for a starting point for items needed in an emergency situation.

What I've been reading.
I've been following and reading author and life hacker Tim Ferris' work since The 4-Hour Workweek
came out but just this month got into his podcasts. I just never was interested in listening to podcasts but I highly recommend his shows. You will get something out of almost any episode you listen to. I have to have pen and paper with me while I listen and usually end up with multiple pages of notes by the end.

These words might trigger in your mind thoughts of week long excursions and altitude acclimation. But it doesn't have to involve all that. There are many high points in the US that involve far less planning and gear and you can take the whole family. And better yet, there are 50 of them! Why go for just a couple of the high points in the US when you can go for all 50?!
Spring and Summer Travel Gear
My first travel essentials list for the year has got to include the very useful Field Notes Brand notebooks. They are the go-anywhere, pocket-sized, American-made, no-electricity-needed, way to jot down your important thoughts on all your travels this year that I reviewed in a previous post. And if you watch their site, their new quarterly color version - Field Notes Spring 2011 edition - may be coming out soon! But, make sure I get one first or we really might have a problem!
I have a goal of reading a classic book
this year. I think that is one of those things one should do every year. Like watching the sun come up at least once a year when you don't have to be up already for work. I had a couple very good experiences doing this last week before the time changed.

I have to admit, when their respective survival shows first began airing I was anti Bear Grylls (Man vs.Wild) and pro Les Stroud (Survivorman). Due to the fact that Bear used a camera crew and had rescue teams on call all the time. Les Stroud, on the other hand, carried all his own camera equipment and at least seemed to be a lot more isolated during filming than Bear was. But now as I read and learn more about his story and life philosophy I have become a fan of the Bear also.

One of the best items you can bring on any trip is a notebook. Writing your memories, feelings, and experiences during or shortly after you experience them is the best way to remember your trip accurately. Writing also allows you to go back and relive the trip exactly how you felt on that day.

CrossFit is a military style cross-training program and I have been working with for it about a month now. Even after being a dedicated gym rat for the past couple years, I am already seeing results.
This training philisophy has been around for a while now, but it is starting to get a lot of media coverage lately.
CrossFit.com is a great resource with training videos, a daily work-out-of-the-day, or WOD, and a community of participants.
There are CrossFit gyms around the country if you need that extra motivation, if not check out the website and try some for yourself.

What Is Your Favorite Type of Trip?...and a Travel Tip
I am curious to see what types of trips people most favor. I for one enjoy traveling to any new places I have never been no matter the means or mode of transport. But I would say that my favorite two types are exploring new places within a car ride of Memphis and also going to new countries anywhere in the world.
